The BBC reported that Bangladesh’s first female prime minister, Begum Khaleda Zia, has died at the age of 80. They said that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) announced on Facebook, “Our beloved leader is no longer with us. She left us at 6am on Tuesday (December 30).

It also said that doctors on Monday night said that Begum Zia’s condition was ‘extremely critical’. She was put on life support, but her age and overall poor health meant that multiple treatments could not be given at the same time.” Begum

Zia became Bangladesh’s first female head of government in 1991 after leading the BNP to victory in the country’s first democratic elections in 20 years, the news outlet reported. 

Al Jazeera reported that Bangladesh’s first female prime minister, Begum Khaleda Zia, has died in a hospital in the capital Dhaka after a long illness, her party and local media reported.

They said that “In her final days, Bangladesh’s interim leader, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, called on the nation to pray for Begum Khaleda Zia, calling her a source of supreme inspiration for the nation.

Begum Zia’s son, Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the BNP, returned to Bangladesh on Thursday after 17 years in exile, where he was welcomed by a large crowd of cheering supporters, Al Jazeera reported. 

Begum Khaleda Zia has spent several years in jail and under house arrest, but she and her party have garnered a lot of support. The BNP is seen as a frontrunner to win the parliamentary elections due in February, the report said. Her son and the party’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, 60, returned home last week from nearly 17 years in exile and is widely seen as a strong candidate to become prime minister.

Reuters also reported that Begum Khaleda Zia was described as shy and reserved until the assassination of her husband, President Ziaur Rahman, in 1981. She later became the head of the BNP founded by her husband and promised to achieve the goal of freeing Bangladesh from poverty and economic backwardness.

Bangladesh’s three-time Prime Minister Begum Zia formally began her political career after taking power through popular vote in the 1991 national election. She introduced a parliamentary system of government and a caretaker government system in Bangladesh to oversee free and fair elections. This information was reported by Indian media outlet NDTV.

They also said that Bangladesh’s first female Prime Minister Begum Zia had been battling multiple health complications for a long time, including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes and chronic problems affecting the kidneys, lungs, heart and eyes. Experts from Bangladesh, the UK, the US, China and Australia were supervising her medical care.

US media outlets CNN and The Guardian said that her political party said in a statement on Tuesday that former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia has died. She was 80 years old at the time of her death.

Dawn reported that BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister, National Leader Begum Khaleda Zia passed away at 6 am on Tuesday, just after the Fajr prayers.
