Satellite Broadcast Disruptions Expected in Bangladesh Due to Solar Outage

Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) has announced that satellite-based broadcasts in Bangladesh may face temporary disruptions for eight consecutive days starting September 29, due to a natural phenomenon known as solar outage. The announcement was made on Wednesday (September 17) in a press release from BSCL spokesperson Omar Hayder.
According to the statement, solar outage is a common astronomical event that occurs twice a year with geostationary satellites, when the sun aligns directly behind the satellite and interferes with signal reception. For Bangabandhu Satellite-1 (BS-1), this event is expected to cause short interruptions in broadcast operations from September 29 to October 6.
The potential disruption timings are as follows:
- September 29: 9:35 AM – 9:38 AM (3 minutes)
- September 30: 9:32 AM – 9:41 AM (9 minutes)
- October 1: 9:30 AM – 9:42 AM (12 minutes)
- October 2: 13 minutes
- October 3: 13 minutes
- October 4: 12 minutes
- October 5: 11 minutes
- October 6: 8 minutes
BSCL said it will closely monitor the solar outage event. Currently, Bangabandhu Satellite-1, the country’s first satellite, provides broadcasting and telecommunication services to both domestic and international clients.
