How to safely save Instagram Stories and Reels
Instagram is no longer just a platform for sharing photos or videos—it’s a vast world of inspiration, entertainment, and creativity. Sometimes you come across stories or reels that you want to revisit later. But Instagram doesn’t allow you to directly download other people’s content, as it falls under copyright and privacy rules.
However, if you want, you can safely and legally store your own content or videos that the owner has given permission to. Learn how below—
How to save your Stories and Reels
1. Save Stories:
Go to the Instagram app and go to the “Archive” section of your profile.
Open any old Story and tap the “Save Photo/Video” or “Save Story” button.
It will be saved directly to your phone’s gallery or Instagram’s “Saved” folder.
2. Save Reels:
When you’re creating a Reel, tap the “Download” icon at the bottom before posting.
If the Reel has already been posted, you can select Download/Save to device from the “…” (three dots) menu (this option only applies to your own content).
3. Use the ‘Save’ feature:
If you like someone else’s story or reels, you can save them to your collection.
Tap the Save icon below the video.
You can later view them offline by going to the Saved section of your profile.
Saving other people’s content with permission
If you want to save a video from a friend or favorite creator, it is very important to get their permission first. Once you have permission, you can use the following legitimate ways—
Instagram “Download your information” feature:
Go to Settings and enter the “Your Activity → Download your information” section. From here, you can download videos or media that you have permission from.
Screen Recording (with permission):
Videos can be recorded using your device’s in-built screen recording feature, if the content creator allows it.
Why permissions and policies matter
Instagram content is usually protected by copyright. Downloading or republishing someone else’s video without permission can be a legal offense. So before saving or sharing content—
Get permission from the content creator, use Instagram’s legal features, and comply with privacy and copyright policies.
The main purpose of saving Instagram Stories and Reels is to make it easy to revisit favorite moments or important content. But it needs to be done safely and ethically. Saving videos you create or have permission from protects both content ownership and privacy.
